The aim of Medical Electives Abroad is to take away the stress involved in organising an elective and make sure you have an unforgettable time away.
This includes booking your accommodation, picking you up at the airport and organising your elective placement. Our on island team will also arrange social events such as cocktail evenings to help you get to know the other medical students better, and will be there to provide 24 hour assistance during your trip. Our team in the UK can help with any pre-departure questions you might have and help you with any university forms you might need.
We know that your elective is a once in a lifetime experience, and marks the culmination of years of hard work. Everyone wants something different from their time away, so our team will tailor your elective placement to ensure you get out of it exactly what you want.
An elective is a great opportunity to expand your medical knowledge and experience, so we will make sure you have plenty of time in the hospital and give you opportunities to work on other health care projects. This might be supporting a local health fair or assisting in a community clinic. We want your elective to make a real difference, and as an organisation we support a number of local health initiatives and charities.
But you have picked the Caribbean for a reason and we want to make sure you enjoy spending your elective in paradise. Our local team will recommend all the best beaches, bars and trips. Our students also receive a free sunset cruise to welcome you to the island, and exclusive discounts with one of the islands top tour operators. From swimming with turtles and discovering waterfalls to rum tours and street parties St Vincent is sure to provide the setting for an unforgettable elective.
One of our main initiatives is to help set up and run local health events. Much of the medical care in St Vincent is centralised around the few hospitals on the mainland. By utilising the skills of our elective students and teaming up with the medical schools in SVG we work to offer free health care events in areas where people often struggle to see medical professionals.
As part of your elective, you will be encouraged to take part in these events and you can even run your own stand. In the past we have had students offer breast exams and advice, help with diabetes tests, and offer general medical advice to people with pre-existing conditions. This gives you the chance to make a real difference during your time in the Caribbean and we will present you with a certificate for your portfolio for taking part. It will also be a great talking point for your elective reports.
We have links with the National AIDS and HIV Secretary should you have a particular interest in this field; and we can try and arrange some time with their team. Our project is always expanding and evolving, with the aim of helping as many people as possible in St Vincent.
